Lactose intolerance (lactase deficiency) DNA test in adults

What is lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance means that a person’s digestion tract cannot digest products containing lactose, a sugar found in milk, because the body fails to produce a specific enzyme called lactase.

 

Usually, everyone produces sufficient lactase levels in early childhood, but over time lactase levels may change. Depending on one’s genetic inheritance, lactase levels in adults may either be sufficient or significantly decrease over time. Undigested lactose is not absorbed through the intestinal walls and stays in the digestive tract, where various bacteria feed on it, which causes:

  • upset stomach;

  • flatulence;

  • diarrhoea;

  • stomach ache.

 

Such digestive disorders are common. Lactose intolerance is not very harmful to your health; however, prevention of this condition may significantly improve your well-being and quality of life.

 

Description of the test

Symptoms alone are not very helpful in detecting lactose tolerance, since many conditions cause similar digestive disorders. Diagnosing lactose intolerance is often based on various breath tests that detect changes in exhalation after consuming lactose. But such tests are not highly accurate and may take several hours.

 

We offer a simple and accurate genetic test to detect lactose intolerance. The genetic test confirms or excludes the presence of mutations in the LCT gene that is responsible for lactase deficiency (hypolactasia) in the body.

 

What if I am diagnosed with lactose intolerance?

Digestion disorders caused by lactose intolerance can be prevented:

  • Include dairy products with low lactose content in your diet or completely avoid products that contain.

  • Following a medical evaluation and a doctor’s recommendation, take medicines containing lactase that help to split lactose, without making any changes in your diet.
